  1. My 18 month old daughter throws violent temper tantrums. In other words, she smashes her head into things, walls, floors, tables, etc. Getting her out of the room is one thing, but getting to stop hurting herself is entirely different. If I try to hold her she turns her fists on me. I’ve started putting her into a pack-and-play, just so she doesn’t have an hard surfaces to bash into. So far it seems to be working, but what I really want her to do is find other ways to expel her anger. I’ve tried giving her things to chew on, but she throws them at me. I can’t get her to calm down long enough to understand the deep breathing exercise either. What else can I do?

  2. Hi Tasha:
The pack and play is a great idea. Your job at this time is damage control. Protect her from herself. She is only 18 months old. She has plenty of time to learn how to manage her anger. Most children stop tantrums by age 4, so give her time.
    Well done!
